People Who Need People...
I've spent a good deal of time this month talking to people. Smart people, consultants, vendors, board members, colleagues, former classmates. I've been asking questions, asking for referrals to speak with more smart people - and getting some great referrals which have led to more great conversations.
I've learned some things - but more importantly, I've realized that I need to ask more questions and consider more options. I enjoy learning. I can read 1000 books, but people are the best teachers. It's wonderful to work in an industry where people are so willing to share their experience, perspective and opinions.
One of the people I talk to on a fairly regular basis is Kimberley Mackenzie. I had the good fortune of doing some internship work for Kimberley this past summer and she has become a great mentor. I admire her thoughtfulness and enduring curiosity. She has lead her charity, the Lake Simcoe Conservation Foundation, to tremendous success in recent years.
She also recently started a blog - and so I'm plugging it tonight. If you don't know Kimberley - I recommend getting to know her and/or visiting her blog. She's smart, funny, interesting and she will make you think.
The Internet's on computer now!
I met Kimberley when she sent in an email to Ken Wymanfor an intern. Although I had another internship, I introduced myself and expressed my interest in her organization. Kimberley encouraged me to consider doing some part-time work for her to add to my internship experience and I was thrilled to accept. *The power of the internet*
This week, I also met another talented fundraising professional through LinkedIn. We hear so often that we've become less social as a result of the internet. I don't think that's exactly right. I think we socialize differently.
I've had the good fortune of meeting many wise and wonderful people as a result of the internet. I'm feeling rather blessed today as a result of the excellent advice and guidance I've received recently. Much of it the result of the ability to communicate via email, blogs and social networks.
So happy surfing to everyone. And remember to check out Kimberley's blog! You never know what you might learn, discover, question or be amused by - as you troll the interwebby.
My goodness Laurie - I'm blushing! I learn far more from you believe me.
